Neerlands Hoop baarde vanaf het begin, in 1968, opzien door een combinatie van harde, politiek geëngageerde teksten met rock \'n roll. De actie tegen de deelname van het Nederlands elftal aan het WK-voetbal in 1978 in Argentinië maakte hen bij sommigen onbemind.Nadat Vermeulen en De Jonge zelfstandig verder gingen, maakte Vermeulen nog vele albums. Hij had met zijn band De Toekomst begin jaren tachtig een hitje met het nummer Politiek. In 1995 won hij de Annie M.G. Schmidtprijs voor het beste cabaretlied, Een doodgewone jongen.
